Course summary

The A-Level in English Literature builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established at GCSE. Students are introduced to the major literary genres and advanced literary studies. During the course, students will read widely and independently, reading set texts such as Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights or Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Sons, as well their own personal choices. Studying an A-Level in Literature, you will engage and respond critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts from pre- and post-1900 while developing and applying knowledge of literary analysis. This two-year course has three examinations. The non-examination assessment (NEA), a comparative literary study, is worth 20% of the overall award. There are three components to the course: • Drama (including Shakespeare) • Prose • Poetry CAREERS English A-Level courses which are very popular can be split into English Language (looking in detail at the structure of language) and English Literature, looking in detail at texts form books, plays and poetry. If you prefer debating and formulating persuasive arguments you may enjoy law, politics and government or business roles. English combines well with all subjects.
