Course summary

Why take the course? A Level Computer Science helps you understand the core academic principles of computer science. Classroom learning is transferred into developing real-world systems through the creation of an independent programming project. This course will develop your technical understanding and your ability to analyse and solve problems using computational thinking. Summary of what is studied (specification) Component 1: Computer Systems. You will be introduced to the internal workings of the CPU, data exchange, software development, data types and legal and ethical issues. Component 2: Algorithms and Programming. This builds on Component 1 to include computational thinking and problem-solving. Project: You will apply the principles of computational thinking to a practical programming project. You will analyse, design, develop, test, evaluate and document a program written in a suitable programming language. Where could this qualification take you? There are some fantastic degrees related to computer science, including Software Engineering, Computer Games Technology and Game Development. You can also combine this subject with courses such Business and Computing or Mathematics and Computing. This A Level could also lead to employment in some of the most forward thinking and exciting industries, in roles such as app developer, cyber security, web developer or IT consultancy.
