German at A Level builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society. We foster a range of transferable skills in the subject, including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding by using authentic sources in German. Lessons are conducted for the most part in German and develop students’ reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. We use myriad resources, including the internet, magazines, interactive vocabulary activities, music, film and literature. We encourage students to spend time in a German-speaking country during their course and are able to assist them in finding work placements in Year 12. Future Proof German is a highly-respected A Level, which can be used to gain entry to many degree courses as an ancillary subject, normally allowing you to learn another language, such as Italian, ab initio. With German a widely-spoken language in Eastern Europe, as well as being the most common mother-tongue in Western Europe, the fact that we do more trade with Germany than any other country in the EU means German-speakers are particularly sought after. An A Level in German also affords you the opportunity of a paid year abroad in a German-speaking country, whether or not you study the subject at university.
Paper 1 Listening, Reading and Writing 50% Paper 2 Writing (Cultural topics) 20% Speaking exam 30% Assessment: all papers sat at the end of the second year of the course.
