Course summary

Biology is a stimulating and challenging study of a rapidly developing subject which is highly relevant in today’s world. Biological matters are constantly in the news with exciting discoveries in genetics and biotechnology. More sinister, global, ecological issues are also ever-present with biologists holding some of the possible long-term strategies that could minimize catastrophic change. A well-informed citizen should be able to understand the principles behind such issues and evaluate the information on offer. The Year 12 course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the essential core concepts of biological molecules, cells, transport systems and DNA. The Year 13 course moves from the core concepts into an understanding of the nervous system, homeostasis, global energy transfer via photosynthesis and respiration, evolution and the frontiers of genetic technology. All students’ learning will be supported by practical work. This will develop an understanding of key protocols and the scientific method as well as the ability to report findings.
