Course summary

‘In the beginning there was the word…’ Language is central to our lives, both individually and socially, politically and globally. The ability to use language at a sophisticated level, whether it be speaking, reading or writing, is a highly desirable skill. The A level English Language course offers students the opportunity to explore and develop their own writing and analytical skills. In Year 12 students will investigate the diversity of the English language and look at language used by different social and regional groups. In Year 13 students study the history of the English Language and explore how children learn to speak, read and write. Students will also complete a language investigation, a piece of original writing and an accompanying commentary in Year 13 for the non-examined assessment component of the course.
