
Studying Philosophy and ethics is an opportunity to engage intellectually with the world in which we live. What dictates the decisions we make? Is there a God and can we prove His existence? Can God be transcendent and immanent? You will have the chance to study a world religion, philosophy and ethics. One third of the course is RE which is ‘suitable preparation for university’ as suggested by the Russell Groups of top universities. Philosophy and ehics is interesting, engaging and will make you think deeply about controversial issues which have been discussed by famous philosophers for centuries, such as Descartes and Gaunilo. If you want your perception of the world to be challenged then RE is the subject for you! The course aims to cover the content of the Specification with examination preparation from the start. The accompanied resources/text books aim to help you get through the course whilst at the same time developing some important key skills needed for the examination. There are clearly defined sections for each of the A01 and A02 areas of the Specification. These are arranged according to the Specification Themes, and use, as far as possible, Specification headings to help you see the content has been covered, for both AS and A Level. The A01 content is detailed but precise, with the benefit of providing you with references to both religious/philosophical works and to the views of the scholars. The A02 responds to the issues raised in the Specification ad provides you with ideas for further debate, to help you develop your own evaluation skills. Year 12 Islam: 1. Religious Figures and Texts – Jahiliyyah, Hijrah, Qur’an 2. Religious concepts – Tawhid, Risalah, Malaikah and Akhirah 3. Religious Life – Salah, zakah, Hajj, 5 categories of action 4. Religious practices – Masjid, Ashura, Ramadan and Eid. Philosophy of Religion: 1. Arguments for the existence of God (inductive) – Aquinas, Craig, Paley, Tennant, Hume. 2. Arguments for the existence of God (deductive) – St Anselm, Descartes, Malcolm, Gaunilo 3. Problem of evil and suffering – Epicurus, Mackie, Rowe, Augustine, Iraneaus 4. Religious Experience – nature, mystical Religion and Ethics: 1. Ethical thought – Divine command theory, virtue theory, ethical egoism 2. Aquinas Natural Law 3. Situation Ethics – Joseph Fletcher 4.
