Course summary

The BTEC Applied Science is an Edexcel vocational course which involves the study of 8 units in total. It is most suited for students who enjoy Science but do not want to specialise in totally in one area and it carries UCAS points. The six mandatory units and two optional units consist of four assignments (internal), two exam exams and one synoptic exam (External). These assignments are in form of written essays, practical investigation and presentations. Once submitted the assignment is marked and graded within 10 days of submission. Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Science (exam) The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop understanding of key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics. This unit will be assessed through a written exam worth 90 marks, which is set and marked by Pearson. Each exam will last 40 minutes. The papers (Biology, chemistry, Physics) are worth 30 marks each. The paper will include a range of question types, including multiple choice, calculations, short answer and open response. These question types will assess discrete knowledge and understanding of the content in this unit. The assessment availability is January and May/June each year. Unit 2: Practical and Scientific Procedures and Techniques (assignment) The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain the knowledge and skills to use a range of practical techniques. Learners will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries. Unit 3: Scientific investigation skills(internal exam) Learners will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate. This unit will be assessed through a written task book (Part B) worth 60 marks. The task is set and marked by Pearson and will be completed in one sitting, within a supervised assessment period of one week. The assessment task will assess learners’ ability to plan, record, process, analyse and evaluate scientific findings, using primary and secondary information/data. In order to complete the written task, learners will need to obtain results/observations from a practical investigation. Pearson will release teacher/technician notes and guidance to centres to enable sufficient time for resource and trialling of the practical investigation.

Entry requirements

Students must have minimum 5-5 in Science and 4 in Maths and English.

How you'll be assessed

The highly practical nature of this unit requires that a significant part of this assessment involves records of learners’ practical activities. There should be evidence of tutor observation of the key chemical techniques used. This could take the form of a witness testimony; checklist and commentary sheet; comments on a general feedback sheet; or indeed, annotations on learners’ own records of their activities..
