Course summary

Music is an essential part of the human experience. It allows us to get creative and communicate ideas and emotions through sound. Alongside this, it helps connect us to different cultures and times. It is a science as well as an art form, which means it will help you build your problem solving, research, planning, analytical and critical thinking skills. Musical performance is collaborative, confidence building and a lifelong source of joy and fulfilment. Music is an integral and essential part of the cultural life of the school and the music department is an exciting place to be. We have incredible facilities, including purpose-built practice rooms and performance spaces, a full recording studio kitted out with industry standard equipment, a dedicated music technology suite and a range of instruments for students to use. KS5 music students are at the centre of the musical life of the school, often taking part in concerts, trips, recording albums, clubs and much more. The study of Music in 6th form will engage and extend an appreciation of the diverse and dynamic heritage of music, promote spiritual and cultural development, encourage life-long learning and provide access to music-related and other careers. Students studying Music at KS5 will choose a pathway - performance, composition, technology or business. The units they study will focus on their chosen specialism - performers will produce live performances, composers will write their own music, tech specialists will record bands and business specialists will look at music promotion and events management. There are several optional units that students can choose from depending on their area of interest, and all students will complete a unity on planning a career in the music industry.
