
A level Sociology is the study of society and how people interact in society. This A level will focus two core themes: socialisation, culture & identity and social differentiation, power and stratification. The core themes will explore how societies develop by examining the social structure of different societies and cultures. The two core themes will be explored in detail by studying different topics including: Education - will allow pupils to study the role and function of education and its relationship to the economy and class structure; the relationship education provides on class, gender and ethnicity; the changes in educational policy. Methods in Context - will require pupils to apply sociological research methods to the study of education Research Methods - will develop knowledge and application of various quantitative and qualitative research methodologies that will be useful for a variety of careers. Families and Households - will study the relationship of the family to social structure and social changes in society but how politics and economics influence the family; the changing patterns of the family and family life in different societies and their relationship to gender roles, relationships, economic changes and the changing population. Crime and Deviance - will make pupils familiar with sociological explanations of crime, deviance, social order and social control; the social distribution of crime based on ethnicity, gender and social class and the difference between statistics and real life impact of crime; the development of crime and punishment and introduction of surveillance society.
