Course summary

Computing is an academic ‘A’ level that is highly respected by Russell Group universities. Computing develops the ability to solve problems and think logically - vital skills in today’s environment. This course can be studied at AS level in 1 year. In A Level Computing you will see an increasing emphasis on technical content, extended answers and independent research. With Computer Science being a very complex discipline, developing a detailed technical understanding is critical to success. Students are introduced to the internal workings of the (CPU), data exchange, software development, data types and legal and ethical issues in Component 1. Component 2 - Algorithms and programming builds on previous learning to include computational thinking and problem-solving. In Component 3 students are expected to apply the principles of computational thinking to a practical coding programming project The $400 billion dollar commercial software industry needs Computer Scientists to develop the next generation of software that will shape tomorrow’s world. Computer Scientists are working in every field of Science and Engineering.

Entry requirements

QEHS 42 Points Grade 6 in GCSE Computing. Maths is a key skill when studying A Level plus strong written communication skills as the programming project requires detailed information.
