You should choose Further Mathematics if you have a real love of Mathematics and want to get a deeper understanding of why and how Mathematics works. You need to be very good at mathematics and enjoy the challenge of solving difficult problems that take you outside your comfort zone. Anybody considering maths, physics, engineering or computing as a degree course should definitely consider Further Maths. A third of Maths BSc degree courses mention Further Mathematics in their entry requirements - for the Russell Group universities, this proportion is much higher. This course is assessed by three two hour exams at the end of the course. Two of the exams will focus on pure maths with algebra, calculus, vectors and matrices. The final exam gives us some choice but we usually teach students mechanics and decision maths as these are the most useful for future degree courses. Further Maths would be an essential choice if you are considering a degree in maths, physics, computing or engineering at a prestigious university. However it is a difficult subject, so choose with care.
QEHS 42 Points Grade 7 in GCSE Maths however we would recommend that students achieve a Grade 8 or above. Students who have completed the Level 2 further maths course will have an advantage but this is not essential. You will need to study Mathematics A Level in addition to Further Mathematics. Some students choose Further Mathematics as a fourth option to give time in Term 1 to assess whether this is the right course for you.
